Passage: The Value of Daily Practice · easy · original practice text
Every skill grows a little each day when it is practised with care. Typing is no different. A learner who spends fifteen minutes at the keyboard every morning will often improve faster than one who practises for two hours once a week. Short sessions keep the mind fresh and the fingers relaxed. They also make it easier to notice small mistakes before they become habits. When you sit down to type, keep your back straight, rest your fingers lightly on the home row and look at the screen instead of the keys. At first your speed may feel slow, but accuracy built in the early weeks becomes the foundation for speed later. Keep a simple record of your results so that you can see the progress you are making. Over a few months, steady practice turns a difficult task into a natural and confident movement.

How this typing test scores you

Your text is compared with the passage word by word. Wrong words, omitted words, extra or repeated words, capitalisation, punctuation and spacing errors are counted separately. Words you never reached are not penalised. See how gross and net WPM are calculated.

General tests are not exam simulations. For exam-specific rules — for example no backspace, 5% error allowance or half mistakes — use the matching exam mock. Scores from different modes are not directly comparable.

Frequently asked questions

How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?

Gross WPM is the number of characters you typed (including spaces) divided by 5, divided by the minutes taken. Net WPM subtracts one word per minute for each uncorrected mistake. Accuracy is the share of characters in correctly typed words.

What is a good typing speed?

Most clerical government posts require 25–35 WPM over 10 minutes with low errors. Data entry posts often ask for 8,000 key depressions per hour (about 27 WPM). Aim for at least 40 WPM at 95% accuracy to have a comfortable margin.
